Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a tango festival, marathon, and encuentro?
A festival runs three or more days and combines workshops with multiple teachers and evening milongas. A marathon is twelve hours or more of continuous social dancing across two to three days, with no workshops. An encuentro is an invitation-only social-dancing event focused on traditional ronda etiquette and balanced gender ratios.
How many tango festivals are there worldwide?
Our database tracks more than 3,300 multi-day tango events across 85 countries, grouped into roughly 1,890 recurring series. Italy, Germany, the United States, France, and Spain each host over 240 multi-day events.
When is festival season for tango?
Tango festivals run year-round, but the peak months are April through October in the northern hemisphere. Winter months see more indoor events in major cities and a wave of holiday-format events in warm-weather destinations.
Do I need to bring a partner to a tango marathon?
No. Tango is danced socially with rotating partners — almost everyone attends marathons solo or in small groups of friends. Encuentros, however, often require registration as a couple or maintain a strict gender balance.
What's the typical price range for a multi-day tango event?
Marathons typically run from 80 to 180 euros for the full pass. Festivals range from 150 to 400 euros depending on the number of workshops and milongas included. Holiday-format events with accommodation start around 500 euros and can reach 1,500 or more for week-long retreats.
Which countries host the most tango festivals?
Italy hosts the largest number of multi-day tango events in our database, followed by Germany, the United States, France, and Spain. Outside of Europe and the Americas, Turkey and Greece have particularly active festival calendars.
How are events on this site verified?
Events are imported from organiser websites, official social-media pages, and community listings, then deduplicated and enriched with location and series data before being published. Historical editions are preserved so you can see how each series has evolved.
